Recipe: Mick’s Green Tomato Chutney

  • kg green tomatoes halved
  • 2 large onions thinly sliced
  • 350g sultanas
  • 500g white sugar
  • 20g salt
  • 350g cooking apples large sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 2inch piece of root ginger thinly chopped
  • 1 jalapeno chilli as ½ inch julienne
  • 1 level teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1 level dessertspoon jeera powder
  • 1 heaped dessertspoon turmeric
  • 0.5 litre malt vinegar


  • Put all ingredients in a big pan and bring to boil. Simmer for 1½ to 5 hours. Drain some of the vinegar if necessary. Fill clean, sterile, hot (put in oven on gas mark 2 for ½ hour) jars to top and seal with plastic and rubber bands. Leave for one month before eating.
